DC Films co-chairman, Geoff Johns has promised that Batman will figure into Flashpoint, the upcoming movie starring Ezra Miller which will adapt the alternate reality comic book run by the same name that Johns had written.
Miller’s version of our scarlet speedster had cameos in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, and he made a proper debut in Justice League. While DC has gotten solo movies for Wonder Woman and Aquaman coming up, a Flash movie has proved much more problematic. While there is no attached director or release date, we do know that the movie will be based on Flashpoint.
Johns confirms that one of the comic’s crucial aspects shall play into the movie. In an interview with EW, Johns had confirmed that Batman would play an important role:
“There’s elements in it that we’re going to be playing into that we couldn’t do anywhere else. The scale of it, the Batman story of it all.”
The Flashpoint comic is a story of the alternate reality that was created when Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother from Reverse Flash, which leads to a dark present day. A notable change is that Batman is Thomas Wayne, who had become the vigilante when his son, Bruce Wayne, was murdered. Watchmen and The Walking Dead star, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has portrayed Thomas Wayne in Batman V Superman and has hinted that he is interested in playing a Flashpoint Batman.
John mentioning the scale of the movie and Batman’s involvement is a criticism of the Flashpoint adaptation that was featured in the third season of The CW’s The Flash. This version of Flashpoint had featured the same setup, but the inability to use DC’s iconic characters and the limited budget had meant that the alternate reality was less epic than its source material.
While reviews for Justice League have been mixed, most seem to agree that Miller’s Flash is the movie’s breakout star. The very fact that Johns promises the story’s important elements will be on display is a hugely encouraging sign.
