3. Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen)
Although no Jedi Chirrut (pronounced chi-RUT) is very in touch with the ways of the Jedi, and has used his spirituality to overcome his blindness and become a formidable warrior. “Chirrut falls into the category of being a warrior monk,” says Kennedy. “He very much still believes in everything the Jedi were about.” Even though he closely follows the Jedi logic, he also knows they will not be coming to save the day anytime soon. As director Gareth Edwards puts it: “This idea that magical beings are going to come and save us is going away, and it’s up to normal, everyday people to take a stand to stop evil from dominating the world.”
4. Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen)
Heavily armored with the weaponry to match, Malbus is almost the polar opposite of Chirrut. Although they may disagree on theology, Malbus still does whatever it takes to protect his friend Chirrut, and respects his point of views. “He understands Chirrut’s spiritual centeredness, but he doesn’t necessarily support it,” Kennedy says. Baze goes along with the Force point of view because, “it’s what his friend deeply believes.”
