Roger Corman’s BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS is a beautiful fun flick. If George Lucas utilized Akira Kurosawa’s HIDDEN FORTRESS as inspiration for STAR WARS, this film is the SEVEN SAMURAI inspired film. It is scripted by John Sayles, music by James Horner, and has special effects by an extremely youthful James Cameron.
1. THE LAST STARFIGHTER
Potentially the best motion picture on this rundown, THE LAST STARFIGHTER is practically the same as STAR WARS. In it, a young man longs for becoming a pilot. He is whisked away to an interstellar war that no one but he can win. He has a mentor who is a strange alien and a love that he must save. Does that sound well known?
