Her birth name was Betty John Pereske. She was the only child of William Pereski, a salesman, and Natalia Weinstein, a secretary. Lauren was raised in a Jewish household. After her birth, she moved to Brooklyn, along with her family. She attended Highland Manor Boarding School for Girls in Tarrytown, New York, and then, Julia Richman High School, Manhattan. When Lauren was 5, her parents got divorced, and she got separated from her father. She took on her mother’s surname.

Her mother remarried Lee Goldberg, and she was also close to him. Lauren attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she was friends with Kirk Douglas. She also worked as a fashion model at St. James Theatre. She made her acting debut on Broadway in 1942. As a fashion model, she appeared on Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue.
As an actress, Lauren appeared in To Have and Have Not. Lauren said that she was very nervous during her screen tests, and to minimize her quivering, she pressed her chin to her chest and tilted her eyes upward. This became another Bacall trademark along with her sultry voice.

During her later years, she appeared in Health, The Mirror has Two Faces, The English Patient, among many others. Lauren was married to Humphrey Bogart from 1945 to 1957 and then to Jason Robards from 1961 to 1969. She had three kids. Lauren died in 2014 and had been buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale.
