Jean was born on January 31, 1929, in Lower Holloway, London. She was the daughter of Charles Simmons and Winifred Loveland Simmons. Jean was the youngest of the four siblings. Jean’s father was a gymnast and a bronze medal winner of the Summer Olympics 1912. He went on to become a physical education teacher and a gymnastic instructor.
Jean had three other siblings named Lorna, Edna, and Harold. She attended Orange Hill School for Girls, Golden Green. Before the Second World War broke out, the family was evacuated to Winscombe, North Somerset. Simmons, along with her sister, used to sing songs around the village.

In 1943, she returned to London and studied at Ada Foster School of Dance. During this time, the film director Val Guest visited the school to find a character for the comedy movie, Give Us the Moon, and Jean was selected. She impressed the critics with her impeccable talent on stage.
Apart from Give Us the Moon, Jean also appeared in the most expensive British Technicolor film of the time – Caesar and Cleopatra – in 1945. It was produced and directed by Gabriel Pascal. Afterward, seeing her talent, the director signed Jean to a seven-year contract. Her most prominent portrayal was Great Expectations by David Lean in 1946.
This film made her consider the acting career seriously and pursue her dreams in the entertainment industry. She had also appeared in Hamlet, which also fetched her first Academy Award, Black Narcissus, Uncle Silas, Adam and Evelyn, The Blue Lagoon, Angel Face, The Egyptian, Elmer Gantry, The Robe, Guys and Dolls, and All the Way Home, among many others. She is also a winner of the Golden Globe Award, National Board of Review Award, and Laurel Award.
Jean was married to Stewart Granger from 1950 to 1960. They had a daughter together in 1956. That same year, they became US citizens. She was married to Richard Brooks from 1960 to 1980. The couple had a kid in 1961. On January 22, 2010, Jean died of lung cancer.
