Thanks to New York Comic Con, an explanation for why KyloRen wears a mask in the Star Wars universe has been revealed. Adam Driver had debuted as Kylo two years ago in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His abilities, internal struggle, and Vader-like designs make him intriguing to follow in the film trilogy fans are eager to see more of him.

Since the design was revealed, many continued to question why Kylo looks like the way he does.  Kylo’s helmet does not serve a purpose in keeping him alive. While fans assume that Kylo wears a mask to further emulate Vader, the reason is more complicated.

Lucasfilm has a booth at New York Comic Con this year, and it features accessories from The First Order. Star Wars News Net is one outlet that attends the convention and made note of the description given for Kylo’s helmet. It calls Kylo “Jedi Killer” and explains that the helmet conceals his identity: “His helmet was crafted to mask his visage and voice, concealing his identity as he delves further into the power of the Dark Side of the Force.”

This is an intriguing aspect to Kylo Ren. The effort made by Kylo to hide his identity as the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, nephew of Luke Skywalker, grandson to Darth Vader may reflect the struggle to determine what side he has to be on. By not letting his identity be known, Kylo might want to avoid comparisons to his lineage.

Kylo’s rational for killing his father was to allow him to embrace the Dark Side and this description illustrates the desire to eliminate the Light Side. His story is not over and may take a turn the course of the new Star Wars film trilogy.

It remains to be seen how much time Kylo spends wearing the helmet during The Last Jedi. Maybe Kylo was not a fan of the mask from the start and will continue without it, allowing his face to be the son of the Resistance’s leader.
