Thanos is currently the greatest baddie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo wants to transform him into an icon.

While addressing ComicBook.com at Comic-Con International: San Diego, Russo stated that he wants to put Thanos on the same level as Darth Vader.

Russo stated of the circumstance in Avengers: Infinity War;

“The stakes are incredibly high. I wanted to turn Thanos into Darth Vader for a new generation. He’s an incredibly intense character. Sociopathic. He takes no prisoners. I think the audience needs to be prepared when they go see these movies.”

Thanos is on a mission for the Infinity Stones to enhance his Infinity Gauntlet, in this way giving him limitless power. When quizzed how this mission influences the structure of Avengers: Infinity War, Russo raised his and his sibling and co-director Anthony Russo’s propensity for utilizing prevalent movies as reference points. He said;

“Structurally, with this first film, Avengers 3, we’ve been using smash and grab ‘90s heist films. There’s a real urgency to the film and it adds a level of excitement and relentlessness to the movie. It’s a lot of divergent narratives coming together into a climax.”

Will Thanos develop a profile as large as Darth Vader by the film’s end? Will fans start guessing over who might win in a battle between the Mad Titan and the Dark Lord of the Sith? Well, audiences will need to wait until May 2018 to discover.

Avengers: Infinity War brings the Guardians of the Galaxy together with the Avengers to go head to head against Thanos and his flunkies. The movie is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, has a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and features Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Benicio delToro, Tom Holland, and Anthony Mackie.
