Tyler was born on September 18, 1979, in San Francisco, California. She is the daughter of a teacher named Robin Gregory and James Tyler, a photographer. As a child, she spent a year living in Ethiopia with her family and later replicated to an ashram in Oakland, California.

When she was ten years old, her parents got divorced, and after that, she was raised by her father. Since a very young age, she developed an interest in comedy. She attended McAteer High School because it had a unique program called the School of Arts. Tyler attended high school with Sam Rockwell and Margaret Cho.

After graduating high school, she went to Dartmouth College, where she became a member of a co-ed fraternity called The Tabard. She also co-founded the Dartmouth Rockapellas, an all-female a cappella group. After graduating in 1992, Tyler worked in an SF advertising agency before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her comedy career.

Tyler started her career as a host of Talk Soup and The Fifth Wheel. The former got canceled after a year, and Tyler left the latter to pursue her other interests. She appeared in Moose Mating, which led her to win the NAACP Image Award. Tyler also wrote and directed the independent short film, The Whipper.

She was featured in the popular sitcom, FRIENDS, as Joey and Ross’ girlfriend.
