Star Wars main franchise is returning to cinemas this December after almost two years of gap. While Rogue One was a good break from the regular pace, Rian Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi is going to further the saga and will bring Luke Skywalker back into the franchise with a major role. The Last Jedi will also see the return of the three new characters which include Poe Dameron by Oscar Issac. However, the latest report hints that Poe is unlikely to lead The Resistance in the future and might be shifting over to the Dark Side. Let’s check out how and where this rumor originated and how credible it is.
The report about Poe being enticed by the Dark Side has come from the Japanese website belonging to The Last Jedi. The website has a description of all the characters and the English translation of the description for Poe reads that he is under suspicion of The Resistance as well as First Order regarding his “dedication to the war effort.” At a time when all the leading characters are facing major existential problems, this hint about Poe switching over to the Dark Side has unexpectedly popped out.
By all means, this is not a confirmation of Poe’s story in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. First of all, it is almost impossible for the website to have such information and the permission to reveal it to the audiences. Star Wars is renowned for keeping the plot wrapped till the very end and the few trailers that have come out, have revealed next to nothing about the plot. This would turn out to be a major spoiler for the film if Poe’s intentions were revealed like this. The more likely scenario is some context being lost in the translation and the meaning of the actual Japanese text on the website being different from the interpretation.
At the same time, it would be fascinating to watch Poe being lured into the Dark Side. Among the three new heroes, Poe is the one who has appeared to be the most determined in his beliefs, and he is a devoted supporter of The Resistance who is apparently being mentored to take over after General Leia. Therefore, he is the unlikeliest person to undergo such a change of loyalties which would turn the plot on its head.
On the other hand, Finn and Rey are the most probably people to make a temporary switch to the Dark Side. John Boyega has suggested that Finn is going to face a big internal struggle in the upcoming movie and he might be disenchanted with both The Resistance and The First Order. On the other hand, Rey will have an encounter with reality when she will come across a weather-beaten Luke Skywalker who is harboring thoughts of an end to the Jedi Order.
Everything will be clear once Star Wars: The Last Jedi plays in theaters on December 15th.
