The latest trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi has pushed all the fans online into a genuine tailspin. Most fans felt guilty during the sequence when Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), on board his deadly TIE Interceptor is apparently targeting his mother, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and her ship. Then, the trailer ended with the premise that Rey (Daisy Ridley) is on a mission to discover her true place and purpose among the chaos and is considering the option of following Kylo Ren. While we believe that all these are false premises aimed to create fan hysteria, as the quick edit of the last scene itself reveals that the scene took place in two different backdrops. Lucasfilm is excellent marketers. It must also be noticed that fans won’t forgive Lucasfilm if Kylo Ren turns out to be the murderer of Princess Leia after having killed Han Solo. It could be possible that he did attack her ship, but, there is no way that he would kill her.

The trailer suggests that Rey has extreme powers. She is so capable that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who already is repenting the fact that he was responsible for creating the monster called Kylo Ren. He erred in the same way that his mentor Obi-Wan-Kenobi had. Thus, it is sensible for Luke that he is not keen to train Rey any further and his refusal might push her towards Snoke (Andy Serkis). However, the main question is, who Rey truly is and what are her origins? She is most probably not a Skywalker. J.J. Abrams had earlier said that Rey’s parents didn’t feature in The Force Awakens. That pretty much rules out the Skywalkers. It will be weird if she is shown to be an illegitimate child of Leia or Luke. If you look around on the internet, then you will discover that one of the probable theories going around is about Rey being a descendent of Emperor Palpatine.

There is a YouTube channel run by Vincent Vendetta where he clarifies why he believes that Rey is a Palpatine. The strongest argument that he puts forward is Rey’s untamed fighting style. The lightsaber duel that she had with Kylo Ren in the dark forest is quite similar to Palpatine aka Darth Sidius. Vendetta did a parallel between the two and figured out something. The overhead stance, thrusting movements are exactly alike what Palpatine did in Revenge of the Sith. The similarities are too pronounced to be just a coincidence. All Star Wars fans know that lightsaber combat styles are unique to individuals.

Vendetta further shared a visual of Rey’s vision as witnessed in The Force Awakens. She heard Palpatine’s voice at the time when the hallway crumbled around her. Vendetta believes that Luke also realized this connection when he first met Rey on Ahch-To. It requires a good bit of innovation, but, still not entirely impossible. Vendetta has also given other hints. However, his final argument is quite valid. The Skywalker and Palpatine joined forces to conquer the galaxy. The duo of Vader and Palpatine were the real bad guys. It would be a fantastic twist in the story if Rey and Kylo Ren abandon Skywalker and Snoke and chart an independent course of their own.

The new trailer had Snoke saying something to Kylo Ren. In another visual Snoke is shown torturing Rey who is bent back in excruciating agony. Therefore, Kylo Ren might just rescue her, after disappointing Snoke by not murdering her mother. This is certainly possible, however, extremely unlikely to expect Rey to join hands with someone who murdered Han Solo and has the reputation of a ‘monster’ in her own opinion.

We believe that Rey could be an off-spring of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The reason is that Rey was shown as having heard Obi-Wan Kenobi’s voice twice in The Force Awakens. She heard him during her Force vision and also when she contemplated using the dark side to murder Kylo Ren. Luke’s lightsaber is attracted to her. However, we must also remember that Luke’s lightsaber earlier belonged to Darth Vader. Obi-Wan defeated him and handed over the weapon to Luke.

If these things are similar to the wands seen in Harry Potter or the swords from Samurai Code, then they would go to the one who wins a duel. Therefore, the weapon identifies Rey as a Kenobi and that’s why got drawn to her. We must also remember that Obi-Wan Kenobi was the earliest Jedi to overcome death and become immortal in the force. You can never take his powers and presence lightly in the Star Wars saga.

Well, the voiceovers and the lightsaber all suit the Kenobi concept. Lucasfilm aims to release one new Star Wars film annually as long as there are people willing to watch them. Kathleen Kennedy, CEO Lucasfilm has earlier stated that the trilogies belong to the Skywalkers and the solo films are just solo films. However, we saw the characters in Rogue One even earlier. They have links. Lyra Erso also is seen in Jedi robes and wears a kyber crystal amulet. JynErso also has a similar kyber amulet. One look at those two girls and you can figure out that their height, weight, hair color and body size, etc. are all similar to Daisy Ridley aka Rey.

There is no information about what Obi-Wan Kenobi did during his stay at Tatooine. Alongside protecting Luke, he might have had an affair with any relative of Lyra and Jyn. Jedi don’t establish familial relationships. Therefore, any child of Kenobi has to be a secret. Therefore, it is logical that such a child would be hidden especially from the Sith. This latest trilogy is based decades after the last one, yet, it is quite logical that those who brought up Rey knew her importance and kept her hidden on Jakku. Lucasfilm might try to reintroduce Obi-Wan Kenobi and eliminate the doubts about Rey’s parentage. It will also establish a link between all the movies and enhance fan interest by bringing back Ewan McGregor who is interested in playing the role again.

We agree that all of it is pure speculation, but, a great deal of fun to discuss. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is only two months from release. We believe that this trailer was a superb set of misleading clues. The worst thing that could be possible is to show Rey as a virgin birth aimed at restoring the force’s balance. Our vote goes to Rey being a Kenobi!
