What Is The Reason Behind The Joker’s “Damaged” Tattoo In Suicide Squad?

Whether we like him or not, it is undeniable that Jared Leto’s Joker as seen in Suicide Squad has a very different visual track compared to what we have been used to seeing. While he still has those green hair and white skin, however, his tattoos and metal teeth have given a makeover to the Batman’s enemy.

Despite the modifications, everything is still firmly placed in the equation that he has with the Gotham, city vigilante. David Ayer recently talked about the “damaged” tattoo that the deranged Clown Prince of Crime sports and what is the relation of the death of Jason Todd with the tattoo. He explained:

This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

David Ayer talked with Empire, and he went on to clarify that the metallic teeth and the “damaged” tattoo, both originate from the Batman comics A Death in the Family story. After Joker kills The Boy Wonder, Batman tracks him down and beats him so savagely that his teeth are all broken and get replaced by a new shiny, metallic grill. We know the kind of power that a Batman punch has, and Joker probably got more than a few.

This storyline is consistent with Jared Leto’s adaptation of The Joker. This guy is more wasted than any other previous version of the criminal that we have seen and we can guess that he would have gone crazier at the prospect of Batman disfiguring his smile. After he is pummelled by the Batman, Joker realizes how the beating has altered his appearance, and that’s when he gets the “damaged” tattoo done on his forehead during his time in the Arkham Asylum. This is a reminder for the Batman so that he knows to what extent he went when he failed to be at the side of his partner.

This is exactly what the Joker is a specialist in. Despite being defeated, he is the one who always has the last laugh. We saw how the Ben Affleck version of Batman is always guilt-ridden and we can anticipate that his response is not going to be good when he will see the “damaged” word tattooed on the forehead of his enemy. This definitely hints at a grand battle sometime later in the DCEU.

This discovery only ramps up the excitement for the upcoming Batman solo film. There is a new Batman in place and a different Joker, and it is time to relish their fight. We will bring to you further details as they emerge about the upcoming Batman solo film and in the meanwhile, you can enjoy Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad.
