Thor: Ragnarok will set MCU history and feature the first confirmed LGBT character that will appear in a Marvel Studios movie.

Tessa Thompson confirmed that her character, Valkyrie, is bisexual.

“She’s bi,” Thompson tweeted in response to a comment from a fan on Twitter. “And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!”

The subject had been raised by a fan in reference that Valkyrie is a lesbian or had been in a romantic relationship with a woman in Marvel Comics Universe.

Valkyrie is not the first LGBT hero. The distinction belongs to Joey Gutierrez, an Inhuman who joined Daisy Johnson’s team of Secret Warriors on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.

Marvel has come under criticism for featuring straight romantic relationships in film and television. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn had said that just because there has not been an LGBT romantic story, it surely does not mean that there are no LGBT characters in MCU.

“There are a lot of gay people in the world. There are a lot of bisexual people in the world. There are a lot of characters in the MCU. We’ve barely gotten to know the sexuality of any of those characters,” Gunn said.

“We know Gamora and Quill are interested in each other. That’s about the only sexual relationship that exists within the Guardians. We know Drax has a past with a wife so he’s got some sort of interest in women. But we don’t really know who’s gay and who’s not. It could be any of them.”

Thor: Ragnarok has a 4.17 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating and this makes it the second most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com Users.

Other upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies include Black Panther on February 16, 2018, Avengers: Infinity War on May 4, 2018, Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, the fourth Avengers movie on May 3, 2019, the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 5, 2019, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020.
