Warner Bros. has revealed the first trailer for Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage. The movie is an adaptation of the arcade game, which revolves around massive monsters destroying cities across the world. It is a simple premise but this combined with the star power of The Rock, has the makings of what may be the first good video game movie Hollywood has produced. But now we have footage that gives us an idea of what Rampage, which will arrive in theaters on April 20, 2018, will look like.

Rampage sees Dwayne Johnson as Primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who shares a bond with George, an intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since he was born. But a rogue genetic experiment goes awry and transforms the ape into a raging monster with other creatures around the world. Destruction ensues across North America. Okoye teams with a genetic engineer to make an antidote, but they have to fight their way through an evolving battlefield. They will need to stop the disaster and try to save George, the animal who was his friend.

The cast includes Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Jack Lacy (How to be Single), Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike), Naomie Harris (Skyfall), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Marley Shelton (Planet Terror). Brad Peyton, who worked with Johnson previously on San Andreas, directs the movie, with a script from Ryan Engle (Non-Stop), Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel) and Ryan Condal (Hercules).

Fans would settle for a good one that was fun without having to make excuses for the shortcomings. Rampage can be good and fun. It is a video game that may make for a fun monster movie. Hollywood has nailed the monster movies many times in the past.

The summer movie season has extended a bit over the years as more movies are released every year. So Warner Bros.’ decision to release Rampage by the end of April would mean that they have a whole lot of confidence. And, Baywatch aside, The Rock does not have movies that bomb, so this may be a safe bet, at least financially.
