‘The Flash’ Has A New Super Power In “The Trial of The Flash”

The Flash had its midseason premiere a short while back, and it showed Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) being convicted of having killed Clifford Devoe/The Thinker (Neil Sandilands). Although Barry hadn’t committed the crime and it would have been very easy for him to come out as The Flash to be acquitted, Barry chose to stay mum, however, Iris (Candice Patton) nearly did the same and in the course of events, she found that her husband has a previously not known power. We had earlier guessed that the time that Barry had spent in the Speed Force after the end of the previous season and start of this season might have blessed him with new powers, but, it was only last night that it was affirmed. Yes, Barry has new powers and abilities. Just when Iris rushed into the court room to out her husband’s secret, superhero persona, Barry flung himself to stop her. It wasn’t as if he used super speed to put her far away from the courtroom. He just put his hand on her shoulders, and it seemed to them that the whole world was frozen other than the conversation that those two were having. Iris was stunned by it, and she asked him how this was possible. Barry told her that he didn’t know the answer as it was a brand new ability which allowed him to make Iris move with him at the same pace as he did, and they were moving so fast that nobody else could see or hear them.

By simply holding Iris, Barry managed to give her his speedster powers, at least as far as both of them moving real fast was concerned. That’s quite unlike to Barry picking someone up and hauling them at the super speed. Momentarily it might be, but,  Iris got connected to the Speed Force with Barry. Although, this doesn’t have an exact comic book precedence, the comics did show Barry and other fast guys to be capable of stealing the motion or momentum from other living beings and objects, to enhance their own speed. This ability is called speed theft, but, what Barry showed last night seems to be the extreme opposite of that because Barry didn’t steal Iris’s speed. Rather, he shared his speed with her.

Talking of the other new powers that the Speed Force might have given Barry, we are sure there are more, but, it might take sometime for us to see those on display. Now that Barry has been convicted of murder, given a sentence, and put in the same Iron Heights cell where his father had languished for years, he won’t have too many opportunities to appear as The Flash. Taking into account the next episode’s preview, it is all going to be really bad for Central City. The absence of Flash gives criminals to roam free in Central City, however, not everything is lost. Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer) will get a shot to take care of things, which would mean that he will get a brand new costume which is far advanced than the first costume that fans saw him in.

“It’s a little hard to get into, but it’s fun to wear actually.” Sawyer mentioned his previous year’s costume. “It does not leave much to the imagination, but putting it on is fun and it lends itself to a lot of comedy, a lot of moments there with that.”

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW. “The Elongated Knight Rises” airs January 23rd.
