Superheroes are weird, and they are not known for fostering unity. Although these comic book characters have huge and loyal fan bases and bring in billions of dollars from the movies, fans are generally divided about the comic book company that they follow. While some love DC, others are Marvel supporters.

Similarly, there have been fierce debates about which Superhero is the toughest. There are Hulk vs. Superman discussions, and sometimes we wonder whether Iron Man has better technology or the Cyborg? What will happen if Ant-Man faces off with Atom? It seems, we have now finally got the answer to the question about the most powerful superhero, and we have numbers to back it up.

The university of Leicester (via CRS) undertook a seven-year study of the various superheroes and figuring out how their powers will stand in the real world. Considering everything, a list was prepared which included DC and Marvel properties. This is the list:

1) Superman

2) Wolverine

3) Mystique

4) Thor

5) The Flash

6) Spider-Man

7) Batman

8) The Lizard

9) Iron Man

10) Silver Surfer

Are you surprised by the results? Yes, we can see that the vast numbers of Batman fans must be feeling crazy, however, let us analyze the process that made the University of Leicester students come up with that result.

Various aspects such as their powers, limits, weaknesses, morality, etc. were all factored in. Let’s say, Batman is a mast strategist, martial arts specialist and has great gadgets. However, his gadgets can be harmful and also can be used against him. Below is what the University’s press release stated about Batman.

Though his cape proves to be a vital utility when gliding in comic and media depictions, the student-led research suggests that when gliding Batman reaches velocities of around 80km/hr — which could be fatal upon landing. This inability to perform even the simplest of superhero feats suggest Batman would struggle to get off the ground, let alone save Gotham from the likes of The Joker and Bane.

That’s quite a shock. We have always loved Batman. Therefore, this statement defies the things that we believe in.

At the same time, the list didn’t surprise us when Superman was given the top slot on it. This Man of Steel has a slew of superpowers including near invincibility, strength, flight, heat vision, X-ray vision and freeze breath.

In fact, the only thing that he needs to keep himself going is the Sun, and well that sphere of fire is here for a very long time. He also happens to have the solar flare power which can see him burst through things.

To sum it up, this is quite an interesting study and has given us a few surprises such as Mystique.
