Marvel had recently announced a new animated franchise, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors. The cast of heroes is Ms. and Captain Marvel, Squirrel Girl and Spider-Gwen. The latter hero, created by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez, is an alternate version of Spider-Man where the spider has bitten Gwen Stacy. Something about this announcement, even though it is for an animated project, has all of us wondering if Gwen might find herself swinging over to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Of the new characters that Marvel has introduced in the comics, Spider-Gwen is one of the fastest to take off. The moment she was revealed, fans fell in love with this idea of reversing one of the most iconic deaths in superhero comics. Her costume has garnered a lot of cosplay and fanart. Fans have made a fake Spider-Gwen movie using Emma Stone’s portrayal from the Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Gwen’s adventures took her outside the realm of the comics; video games like Marvel: Contest of Champions and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 have her as a featured character. She was planned as a figurine for Disney Infinity, but that never came to fruition.

How could Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. factor into Gwen’s rise to fame? Dove Cameron, who will be voicing Gwen in Secret Warriors, will play a new character in the ABC series’ 5th season, though no other details have been given. Cameron will be a S.H.I.E.L.D. member and play someone in live action and animation.

Chloe Bennet, who plays Quake, will voice her AoS character for Marvel Rising and Clark Gregg, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Iain De Caestecker have voiced their characters in other animated series. Squirrel Girl in Secret Warriors will be voiced by Milana Vayntrub, who plays her in the live-action New Warriors series.

So, how can they do a Spider-Gwen when Sony owns the Spider-Man rights?

Sony and Marvel are on good terms, so a situation where a not-quite-main Spider-Man character appears in the MCU is not much of a stretch. This with the fact that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. revealed most of the Agents had been sent to a future where the Earth was destroyed. This provides a workaround to the inter-dimensional aspect of the character’s comics incarnation.

The stars are perfectly aligned for this to not be a possibility. Gwen is too popular to be stuck in animation and video games. After spending decades as a damsel in distress, introducing Gwen Stacy to the live-action Marvel Universe seems right.
