We had announced last week that Lucasfilm is going to base its next Star Wars movie on the Obi-Wan Kenobi storyline. Now a report has come out that the film might be based on the time that the Jedi legend spent on the desert planet Tatooine during his exile. We don’t know much about the film other than the fact that it is yet at a very nascent stage and Stephen Daldry is likely to direct this sci-fi film. There is no clarity either about Ewan McGregor once again playing the role of Obi or not. However, it would certainly be a great plus for the project is he joins it.

As per Omega Underground, the tentative title for this Obi-Wan-Kenobi solo film is ‘Joshua Tree.’ Considering the fact, Joshua Tree is native to Yucca Valley desert in California, the speculation about the film featuring a desert planet becomes even more credible. The period is likely to be the time span of 20 years that the Jedi Knight spent between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope during which he oversees the growth of Luke Skywalker.

However, all this talk has come from indirect sources only, and nothing has been officially stated by either Lucasfilm or Disney. It is another thing that A New Hope had a lot of scenes filmed in Joshua Tree which makes the reference quite obvious unless of course, they are crazy enough to contemplate using U2’s album Joshua Tree for this film’s soundtrack. There is no dearth of great shooting locations in the Californian desert. However, it is likely that the film will be shot in another country just like the spin-off of Han Solo. During its production stage, Return of the Jedi was tentatively titled Space Bears, a title that was relevant to the plot and if that’s a hint then ‘Joshua Tree’ is not surprising as a title for a film showing the Jedi wandering in the desert.

It is unlikely that the Obi-Wan Kenobi film will be 100% based on the incidents at Tattooine. As witnessed in the Han Solo movie which had a working title ‘Red Cup’ but, had nothing to do with secretly drinking beer in the red disposable cup. What it suggests is that while it is sensible and would be beneficial for the film to be shot in California, it is not an absolute certainty that the ‘Joshua Tree’ will be relevant to the plot of the film.

While right now it is nothing more than unsubstantiated speculation because the Obi-Wan Kenobi film is not yet off the blocks in terms of production activities, there is a great probability of there being a Tatooine connection. The native of Joshua Tree and the main guy of Queens of the Stone Age, Joshua Homme might just get to play the role of a droid in a Star Wars film if it indeed gets shot in the California desert. We will have to wait for a little more to get more news about the Obi-Wan Kenobi film you can check the video below wherein Homme is trying to enact the character of the King of the Droids in The Force Awakens:
