It’s official, the number one best selling comic book of 2017 is Marvel Legacy #1. The conclusion is based on unit sales to comic book stores, as per Diamond Comic Distributors.
Marvel Legacy #1 was written by Jason Aaron, and it featured art by various top Marvel artists led by Esad Ribic. The issue had a wraparound cover designed by Joe Quesada.
Marvel also grabbed the Top Publisher’s spot as per dollar and unit market shares. The comic book giant claimed 36.36 percent dollar and 38.3 percent unit share.
Five of the top ten best-selling issues of 2017 also belonged to Marvel: Marvel Legacy #1, Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #1, Secret Empire #0, Secret Empire #1, and Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey #1.
The second spot among the comic book publishers was occupied by DC Entertainment. It had a 30.07 percent dollar and a 33.93 percent unit share. The top comic of 2017 from DC was Dark Nights: Metal#1. This special issue is created by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, and Jonathan Glapion. It was the second highest selling comic of the year gone by. DC also had five of its titles in the top ten comics of 2017: Dark Nights: Metal #1-4 and Doomsday Clock #2.
The top ten graphic novels listing was ruled by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga. Riding on its success, Image Comics became the number three publisher of 2017. Image had a 9.8 percent dollar and a 10.12 percent unit share in 2017. Image occupied 8 out of top ten spots for graphic novels. The best-selling graphic novel of 2017 was Saga Volume 7. The other Image publications which made it to top 10 were: Saga Volumes 1 – 4, Paper Girls Volume 1, Monstress Volume 1, Seven to Eternity Volume 1. The best-selling comic for Image books was The Walking Dead#146. It occupied number 82 overall.
The fourth largest publisher was IDW Publishing. Its success was mostly due to the titles it licensed from Hasbro, Disney, and Lucasfilm. IDW had a 4.54 dollar share in 2017, and its best-selling comic book was Star Wars Adventures #1 which was at number 381 overall.
The top five of biggest publishers was rounded off by Dark Horse Comics which had a 3.12 percent dollar share. The biggest Dark Horse comic book in 2017 was Neil Gaiman’s American Gods: Shadows#1 at number 292 overall.
