In an attempt to give a modern take, Justin Lin, the producer who became renowned inFast & Furious movies is working on a reboot of the ‘80s crime-fighting show Knight Rider. Lin is trading the fast lanes, flashy cars, drag races and crazy stunts for this project and this has generated quite a buzz.
The project is a joint venture between Machinima, NBC Universal Brand Development, and Lin’s digital media company YOMYOMF, an acronym for You Offend Me You Offend My Family. The digital series is currently under development and is slated for a 2017 release.
Coming to the TV show in question, the original Knight Rider aired from 1982 to 1986. The show starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight and his self-aware, chatty car, KITT. IMachinima CEO Chad Gutstein points out that intelligent cars aren’t as novel as they used to be. He states that “Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact.”
Indeed, self-driving cars are no longer a thing of the future (although still pricey). The challenge in front of the producers is to make the idea still attractive to the current generation.
