Ever since the legendary Heath Ledger took on the mantle, the role of Joker has become a benchmark to test method acting. Still, it was a surprise when Karen Gillan said in a recent interview, that she would like to play the famous Clown Prince of Crime. This statement would have looked absurd form most actresses. But Gillan is known to portray the companion of the 11th Doctor (played by Matt Smith) on the famed BBC show Doctor Who, as well as the daughter of mad titan Thanos, Nebula, in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Today, joining the MCU is the biggest thing most actors could wish for, and Gillan would continue to reprise the quite talked-about role of Nebula in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. It is speculated that she might have to face her adoptive father, Thanos. If so, the interaction would be kind of interesting to watch. But amidst all this, her desire to play The Joker has turned many heads.

While attending a Q&A session at Florida SuperCon a while back, she was asked about her dream character from a fandom other than the ones she is currently a part of. It is reported that she chose one of the most iconic characters ever created, Joker.

“Oh, can I say something DC? Okay, I’m going to say something DC, and I’m going to play the Joker. Maybe a female Joker.”

Now, it might look absurd, largely because there has never been a female Joker. However, in the diverse world of comics like DC, nothing is impossible. In the 2011 series Flashpoint, we saw an alternate timeline where Bruce Wayne’s mother, Martha, became the Joker. In the story, Martha Wayne was driven insane after her son Bruce was murdered in an alley, while her husband Thomas Wayne took on the mantle of the Batman. Upon learning this, Gillan was quick to request DC and Warner Bros. to consider her for the role.

However, it must be pointed out that the comic series is presumably the plot for the upcoming movie, Flashpoint. Also, in Dawn of Justice, Lauren Cohen (of the Walking Dead fame) already portrayed Martha Wayne. So it looks like that Gillan’s dreams might remain unfulfilled.
