Hocus Pocus 2 is very well alive and well. Things have been a little quiet with regards to the sequel but Mick Garris, the screenwriter of the movie, says that the sequel may happen as a TV movie for Disney. He promises that the original cast will return if the project goes into production.

Mick Garris spoke with Forbes on a range of topics from his career. The subject of Hocus Pocus 2 came up, and though he was not involved, he revealed that the script is under development and it will air on Disney Channel, Freeform or ABC, rather than getting a theatrical release.

“There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die. I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it, but I think there will be a sequel it might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television, but I hear that it is moving ahead.”

This must the delight 90s Disney fans, but let us not get too carried away. As Mick Garris said, we have been hearing about the potential Hocus Pocus sequel for a long time. The original one starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the sisters.

“I think they are [bringing back the original cast]. If they don’t do that, I think it would be a big mistake because all three of them are still so incredibly potent and powerful and great performers and who else can recreate those characters?”

Over the past few years, the actresses have been asked about shooting a Hocus Pocus sequel. They have expressed their willingness to come back. In 2014, Midler said that fans needed to really beg Disney to make this happen. Maybe there has been a lot online chatter to justify it, but it sounds like we may see this movie happen.

Doing Hocus Pocus 2 as a TV movie makes sense. The original one has become a classic, but it did not do big business at the box office. It has stayed in rotation during the Halloween season and has a fan following. So if they can keep a reasonable budget and get the original cast back and play it during Halloween for the next couple of years, it may generate more than enough money to make it worth its investment.
