With news that some Star Wars characters will get their standalone films after Disney took over, (Han Solo and BobaFett confirmed) it asks the question if we will finally know the true backstory of Yoda.
We do not know much about Yoda. This is not an accident. Over the years Lucas has set out to stop attempts to develop his back story. He even ordered the cancellation of a run of cards that depicted Yoda like beings.
Lucas did not want people to see Yoda as just a member of race as this may have destroyed the mystique.
For years it was thought that Yoda was unique and there were was no one like him in the Star Wars universe. Lucas has kept the history, origin, name and whereabouts unknown for many years. It was not until Episode I: The Phantom
Menace that fans saw another of what has become known as Yoda’s species. Her name was Yaddle, and she sat on the Jedi Council.
“When 900 years you reach, look this good, you will not” is what Yoda said to Luke when he returned to the swamp planet of Dagobah.
Yoda was born on a remote planet that had not been named, and he was not aware of his potential as future Jedi. It was not until a ship Yoda was traveling on was struck by an asteroid and wrecked after drifting in space for several days, a swamp-like planet had appeared, and they crash landed there. It is worth noting that this swampy planet was not Dagobah as Lucas has stated.
It was on this planet that Jedi Gormo had found them and exposed Yoda’s potential. Yoda was taken under the tutelage of Master Gormo, and Yoda left this planet as a trained Jedi.
He was then sent to Coruscant and continued training in Jedi Temple and became a Jedi Master.
From a business side, there is a whole Universe of new characters that Disney can introduce. As long as they are not like Gungan. Fans may like these standalone movies to be removed from the ‘episode’ films.
This could rule out Yoda’s training of Count Dooku which is mentioned in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, but Dooku’s training can be factored into a film that features one of the stories we know about Yoda. The time he declared what everyone on the council thought was the rising of the Sith.
This was an outlandish statement for Yoda, and many younger Jedi believed this to be short-sighted. In response to the claims, the young Jedi formed a breakaway faction which was named the Potentium.
Going against the millennia of Jedi teachings was not approved of by other council members and Yoda was to lead a campaign to expel rebels from the Jedi Order.
The rise of the Sith happened as well as a bloke turning up to bring balance to the Force. There was one Jedi left once balance was restored, and he was unable to sing the “I told you so” song.
Whether Disney decides to do a Yoda standalone film is yet to be confirmed.
