The animated movies from DC are spectacular, to be frank, it is safe to say that they are even better than Live-action films that we’ve gotten till now, except the Wonder Woman. These films have managed to generate hoards of genuine fans over the years. The DC animated movies are perfect comic book adaptations, and that’s the reason fans love it.

One of the top 10 Batman graphic novels of all time – “Gotham By Gaslight” is getting an animated movie treatment. We are going to see the Victorian age Batman battling the famous serial killer “Jack The Ripper.”

Gotham By Gaslight comic book was released in 1989, and it was a huge critical success! It is considered a classic and a must-read for anybody who is into comics. This comic book was a solo adventure of Batman in the 19th century, but later it was included in the Else-World canon of DC Universe.

This epic tale of caped crusader set during the Industrial Revolution is written by Brian Augustyn, and the illustrations are done by Mike Mignola, who is the creator of the famous “HELLBOY.”

Gotham by Gaslight sets a perfect environment of the 19th century, and the story starts with the earlier days of Bruce Wayne as Batman. The writer maintains a fantastic balance between character development, world building, mystery elements, easter-eggs and the plot twists.

He didn’t try to over-do anything; it doesn’t go too far to show us a steam-powered Bat-Computer or Bat-Chariot/Mobile. Brian Augustyn also gives us a peek inside the distorted mind of Jack The Ripper by expressive self-talk panels. Gotham by Gaslight is written in such a way that DC can easily create a full-blown comic book series or even animated series on it.

It even manages to introduce us to Joker of that era, and his presence is described in such a way that you would instantly get curious to know more about him. Here is the panel where we can see the existence of Joker in this universe:-

There was also a game in development that was based on the concepts of Gotham by Gaslight. We were able to find the prototype gameplay footage (Video below) but it was canceled as the Studio decided to go with the Arkham games. There are rumors that Rocksteady (The makers of Arkham games) will bring back this game out of the production hell.  To be really honest, playing as Batman of the 19th century could have been a unique experience for the Bat-fans. Here’s the video that shows the snippet of prototype gameplay:-
