It has been a year since the Wonder Woman comics writer Greg Rucka confessed that as per his interpretation, the iconic heroine is “queer” and now the fans are rallying together to pressure Warner Bros. into depicting her as a bisexual character in the sequel scheduled for 2019.

In fact, Gianna Collier-Pitts, who is a GLAAD campus ambassador at NY University has launched an online petition on Change.org which is asking the studio to “directly acknowledge Diana Prince for who she is, who she has always been (regardless of her current love interest), and what her character could potentially represent for millions of people.”

The petition went online on Thursday and has already received over 2,200 signatures on it.

Wonder Woman’s Diana Prince hails from Themyscira, land of the Amazons and inhabited exclusively by women,” Collier-Pitts mentioned in the petition. “This alone should serve as reason enough to confirm her sexuality, since any close relationship she could have had prior to her romantic storyline with Steve Trevor would have had to have been with another woman. Some of you may be thinking that this specificity doesn’t make a difference but for people like me who rarely see themselves reflected in media, believe me. It does. […] Making Wonder Woman canonically bisexual on the big screen would make her the first openly LGBTQ superhero of any gender from either DC or Marvel’s cinematic universes and would solidify her place as a true role model for women of all ages and identities.”

Back in September 2016, Rucka had expressed his thoughts about the sexual orientation of Wonder Woman and the Amazons to whom she belongs, and he called it “complicated”, stating, “This is inherently the problem with Diana: We’ve had a long history of people — for a variety of reasons, including sometimes pure titillation, which I think is the worst reason — say, ‘Ooo. Look. It’s the Amazons. They’re gay!’ And when you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due, the answer is, ‘How can they not all be in same-sex relationships?’ Right? It makes no logical sense otherwise.”

The issue was later addressed by Gal Gadot, the actress who plays Wonder Woman in the movie and she agreed that although the movie didn’t really explore the angle, however, “when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he said makes sense. In this movie, she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.”

The Petty Jenkins directed Wonder Woman has crossed the $819.5 million globally and its sequel will once again have the same director-actor duo of Jenkins and Gadot in their places. The film is currently under development, and its release is scheduled for December 13, 2019.
