The 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron created a lot of legendary MCU moments and as Marvel fans we loved many of the movie’s scenes. However, to see that Captain America was unable to lift Mjolnir was not really a great moment. The fans had expected him to be capable of lifting Mjlonir just like his comic version did. While, compared to other Avengers, Steve managed to stir the mighty hammer, which was an indication that there was some bottled power somewhere which could have made Captain America worthy of it.

Fortunately, one fan theory on GWW has the potential of answering this question that has been bothering Marvel fans for quite a while. As per the proposed fan theory, the answer to this question was within the Captain America: Civil War film, but, most likely missed by the audiences.

Why Is The Captain Not ‘Worthy?’

One quality which sets Captain America apart from the other Avengers and MCU heroes is the selflessness and commitment that he displays towards others. In the movie Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve was shown diving onto a grenade and bear the explosion to ensure that none of those around him got hurt, despite the fact that all of them used to make fun of him earlier for being timid and weak. You might not realize it, but, that takes some serious strength of character.

Then what prevents him from lifting the hammer of Thor? There is no doubt about the selfless attitude of Captain America; it is his concealing of truth from Tony that makes him unworthy.

Captain America: Civil War revealed the heart breaking truth about the brainwashed Bucky Barnes, being the killer of Tony’s parents and their death was falsely attributed to the car accident as earlier suggested in Iron Man 2. Then on, things only turned worse and it was not helpful that Steve knew this truth, but, didn’t tell Tony.

It is reasonable for Steve to have held back because he feared about Tony’s reaction to such a revelation, the decision to conceal the truth was not his own. Taking into account, the fact that Bucky didn’t return to the films until Captain America: The Winter Soldier that released in 2014, Steve held this information a secret for two years. Now that made perfect sense as the incidents in Age of Ultron took place at a time when Steve was hiding the truth from Tony which made him unworthy. Now, this also means that the Captain will have no problem lifting the hammer in future as there is no burden on his heart. This in turn brings us to another question:

Will Captain America Lift Mjolnir In Infinity War?

The Avengers: Infinity War is going to be massive and there are some of the actors of the film who have stated that the film will be the all time biggest film. Such comments only raise the stakes for the film and another way to raise the fan expectations will be if Captain America picks up the Mjolnir in the face off with Thanos once Thor goes down.

You know that Chris Evans hasn’t shown much enthusiasm about renewing his contract with Marvel, therefore, a tragic possibility is that Steve Rogers will perish in the upcoming movie. In fact, this thought has gained so much strength that theories are being created about the manner in which he will die. Although, it is hard to reconcile to, this is what Chris Evans himself stated:

I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter. They said they had so many other characters to fit in – Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant Man – and couldn’t get them all into one movie.”

This makes us feel that Chris had to continue only because they had converted the film into a two part saga and now with the release of this film, Steve Rogers existence might come to an end. If that happens then the least we can expect is for Steve to make a grand exit to make his fans happy. One such grand moment will be for him to wield Thor’s hammer which would confirm that he was righteous and worthy. Although, we don’t know whether this will happen in Avengers: Infinity War or not, just like everyone we would love to see it take place!

Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 4, 2018!
