A fresh piece of fan art illustrates the potential look of Henry Cavill as Superman in the DCEU’s version of Kingdom Come. The legendary comic book creators Mark Waid and Alex Ross came together to create the critically appreciated Kingdom Come series in 1996, featuring old and retired DC superheroes putting on their costumes for a final time in their bid to save the world from falling into the hands of a new set of superheroes, who can’t understand the difference between good guys and bad guys.
Just like the other Elseworlds narratives, Kingdom Come also stayed out of the main DC Universe. However, it featured various iconic DC Comics characters which appeared to be fading into oblivion as the new generation of characters took over. The story showed Superman and rest of the world’s best heroes retire after realizing that their principles were no longer revered by the world, especially their hesitation in committing cold-blooded murders. However, after Kansas was ravaged by a new bunch of superheroes who kill wantonly, Superman re-established the Justice League for a mega showdown against Magog’s Battalion (the new bunch of superheroes), the Mankind Liberation Front (squad of Golden Age villains) by Lex Luthor and Batman’s Outsiders (superheroes opposed to Justice League).
It has been a long-standing wish of the comic book lovers to get a Kingdom Come movie for a long time. Although, it is not on the horizon, but, it doesn’t mean that you can’t imagine how such a movie would look like. Twitter user SPDRMNKYXXIII shared a new fan art imagining Henry cavil as the Superman from Kingdom Come. Check it out:
The Kingdom Come comic series came at a time when comic books had become dark and gutsy and most of which aimed to demolish the superhero identities, and it once again brought back the concept of Golden Age heroism. Maybe that’s what DCEU needs at present, but, we don’t see it happening, at least not in the near future. However, it is not undoable either.
Taking into account that DC Films is stepping into the Elseworlds arena with a movie on Joker’s origin story, it is quite possible that a Kingdom Come movie might be developed in the future. However, it is going to be important to see who will play Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and other major heroes, considering that the studio might decide to keep that kind of stories out of the expanding DCEU. Assuming that Ben Affleck’s version of Batman is already at the finishing line of his crime-fighting career, it would be fascinating to see the core DCEU cast of today, come back in a decade or so for a Kingdom Come version. Casual audiences might not understand the logic behind WB making such a movie, but, it would certainly appeal to regular DC Comics fans, who would no doubt queue up to watch it.
