It has mostly been all dark in the Dark Knight’s life so far but it is supposed to gloom a bit finally in DC Comics’ Batman 24. After having a 75-year long relationship with Catwoman, the man of Gotham City at last can be seen getting down on his knees unmasked to ask the lady of his life for marrying him. Batman writer Tom King describes this as the culmination of their 75 year relationship into ‘one unprecedented moment’.
Tom King has quite a few expectations from the new issue of Batman. He said, “I want people to go home and be like, ‘Should she marry him? Should she say yes?’ There’s a whole conversation that could come out of this.”
Catwoman was not the only lady to have found a place in Batman’s heart. From reporter Vicki Vale to the villainous Talia Al Ghul and probably he shared a kiss with the Wonder Woman once. However, Catwoman has been the only lady to have exposed the emotional side of Batman every now and then. King Says,“Catwoman is someone who’s seen his pain and has been through stuff as bad as he has been through. She says, ‘Look, both of us are broken, but we can be broken together’.”
King also described why he planned such an out-of-the-turn event in this issue. He wished to surprise all Batman fans with a bit of romance. He said, “Everyone’s done vengeance, everyone’s done ‘The night is so dark.’ Giving Batman more pain doesn’t reveal anything about his character because he’s taken as much pain as he can. But giving him love and joy, that combines with the tragedy of his past into something new and never done before.”
King had some help from his 7-year-old daughter who is obsessed with Superheroes as well as romance, while writing Batman’s proposal scene. He also explained what was going through his mind while writing this epic scene. He said, “Was this a moment of vulnerability or a moment of arrogance? That’s almost the cliffhanger. Is Batman making the greatest decision of his life or the greatest mistake?”
Wondering what Catwoman’s reply is? Bother not! That is still a bit far away as Batman warns her to get his darkest secrets known before she makes up her mind. King had some words for the next (Batman 25) issue as well. He said, “It’s like, ‘You think you know me, but you don’t know me until this,’ The actual answer will come after he reveals something he’s never revealed to anyone, and she has to decide whether that’s good or bad.”
