One of the biggest films that were shown at D23 Expo last weekend happened to be Avengers: Infinity War and it is likely to be among the most talked about films at San Diego Comic Con 2017.

No wonder, Marvel fans are delighted and buzzing with excitement to find out what new revelations are made about Infinity War; although we have already come to know quite a bit of interesting information in the last few days.

The biggest and most important information that we obtained about Infinity War characters and narrative was the first time we came to know about the MCU adaptation of The Black Order. They are a set of warriors comprising The Mad Titan’s “children” who will take on the MCU heroes.

However, we noticed a prominent omission in the MCU portrayal of The Black Order and other promotional materials belonging to Infinity War as revealed at D:23.  There was no mention of Thane, the Son of Thanos as seen in the Marvel Comic Books. This made us wonder if we will see him in Avengers: Infinity War? Let’s figure out.

Who Is Thane?

As seen in the MCU version, this is The Black Order lineup:

  • Ebony Maw
  • Corvus Glaive
  • Proxima Midnight
  • Black Dwarf

This clarifies that Thane is not listed among them. However, if his Marvel Comics origin is anything to go by, he might have a major part to play in the Infinity War.

In case you are not a Marvel Comics reader: Thane, Son of Thanos, happens to be a under-wraps illegitimate off-spring of the Mad Titan, whom he had fathered when he encountered a descendent tribe of The Inhumans. He ended up impregnating one of their females. Later when Thanos came to know about this half Inhuman son of his, he sent The Black Order to torment the universe and to behead all those young men who could be his illegitimate child.

This search descended on Earth when the king of Inhumans called Black Bolt found out about the existence of Thane. Although Doctor Strange located Thane, he was under manipulation of Ebony Maw and this discovery ultimately led to Thanos also finding out about Thane’s location and coming down to hunt him furiously.

During his battle against Thanos, Black Bolt exploded a Terrigen Bomb, wrapping the earth in a Terrigenesis cloud that created lots of Inhumans all over Earth. This also unleashed the Inhuman powers of Thane. He became an extremely powerful entity capable of beating Thanos as well as The Black Order (excluding Ebony Maw).

Eventually Maw wanted to guide Thane on becoming a “better” man compared to Thanos. Thane tried to become an unparalleled universal conquerer, but, he ultimately died and was later resurrected as the host of the Phoenix Force.

How Can Thane Be Fitted Into Infinity War

The Avengers: Infinity War is going to have a two part story. The first part is not difficult to guess as far as the narrative is concerned as it would be inspired from iconic “Infinity” stories of Marvel Comic such as “Infinity Gauntlet”. However, we don’t know anything about the storyline of Avengers: Infinity War II and we feel that’s the part which can accommodate Thane.

As of now, groundwork is being done to introduce Thane into MCU. The Black Order, Thanos, The Inhuman Royal Family are all pieces of that Thane puzzle which will be introduced in the next one year in MCU or shall we say introduced in detail in case of Thanos. Therefore, it is fairly logical that these things will eventually lead to Thane’s existence on Earth. That might happen before we see the Infinity War II in theaters in 2019.

Another thing to note here is that Phase Three of the MCU will end with the second part of the Infinity  War and thereafter, Marvel Studios will need to create a tremendous evil challenge to Earth’s existence to continue the franchise. By introducing the Inhumans, they will also be able to take care of the timeline thing as well as the issue of the X-Men not being featured in the MCU. Thane and his storyline will perfectly tackle these problems.

This would also clarify the danger posed by Thanos to the MCU heroes as Thane’s existence on Earth will be an added risk to the planet and that’s something Thanos and The Black Order will not overlook.

We don’t know what will happen. There is no suggestion or hint to indicate Thane’s possible introduction to MCU – however, as we noticed, a path is being built for his arrival.
