X-Men rule the world of mutants, and that has often seen the supervillains join them. Let’s have a look at some powerful mutant villains who later became X-Men:

1. Rogue

Rogue debuted in the comics “Avengers Annual” as one of the members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The other members of that group were Mystique, Destiny,  Blob, Pyro, and Avalanche. He has the power to absorb powers of other mutants, and he manipulated Ms. Marvel’s powers and memories in the battle with The Avengers. Later she fell victim to her powers when she experienced a lot of trauma due to the memories that she used to absorb from her victims and enemies. She went to X-Men to seek help, and after a long stint, she finally became a popular member of the group.

2. Deadpool:

There was a time when Deadpool used to be a villainous mutant, but, times have changed, and he is a popular superhero these days. He debuted in The New Mutants #98 and sided with the supervillain called Kingpin (Spider-Man and Daredevil comics). He went on to become a part of the X-Force and the new mutants, and we saw him take on Cable to protect the world in Cable & Deadpool #8.

3. Quicksilver:

Quicksilver is more related to the Avengers and also known as the son of the main enemy of the X-Men, and that establishes a bond between them. He was first seen in X-Men #4 as a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants alongside his sister Scarlet Witch, Toad, Mastermind, and Magneto. He featured in Uncanny X-Men #304 at a time when Magneto wanted to take revenge from X-Men, and Quicksilver chose to side with Magneto’s enemies instead of him. It turned out to be a short association with a nasty outcome.

4. Mystique:

Mystique is a mutant who can switch sides based on her principles and that sometimes puts her on the evil side and at times on the good side. She had joined the league of villains, but, later became an X-Men. Mystique has shapeshifting powers, and she came on board as Foxx in X-Men #171. Emma Frost’s mind-reading power uncovered her, and she was thrown out of the group. She made a comeback in X-Men #181, but, being a double-sided personality, she went against the team and joined a bunch of villains called Marauders.

5. Wolverine:

Wolverine is by far the most renowned and popular X-Men in the history, but, his start was not so good. He debuted in “Incredible Hulk” #181 in the form of a super-powerful killer tasked to stop the Hulk and the white beast Wendigo, by the government of Canada. He joined the X-Men when Professor Xavier requested him to rescue the original team in the comics “Giant-size X-Men” #1.

6.Toad

Toad was introduced as a villain way back in 1964 in X-Men 4, against the superhero mutants. Kieron Gillen created X-Men Regenesis #1 in 2011, and this comic showed the X-Men being divided into one group led by Wolverine and the other led by Cyclops. Wolverine launched his “The Jean Grey School For Higher Learning” which was earlier called the X-Mansion, and that’s the time when Toad joined the team Wolverine.

7. Mimic

Mimic got his mutant powers by way of a chemical accident caused by his father, and he obtained the power to capture the knowledge and talents of any person he desired. Therefore, he went on to absorb Beast’s athletic power, the power beams of Cyclops, freezing powers of Iceman, etc. However, Professor X managed to delete those memories. Later he suffered an explosion and regained the memory and wanted to get permission to join the team. He became an existential threat to the X-Men team as he also had Professor X-s mental powers alongside the earlier powers and later he went on to join the Dark X-Men team raised by Osborn.

8. Callisto

Callisto was created by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith in 1983 comics “Uncanny X-Men” #169 as the head of an underground mutant gang. He had a secret base under the New York City that housed those mutants who were rejected by humans. Several of those Morlocks were disfigured. She once kidnapped Angel, the winged X-Men. X-Men came to the rescue and a battle ensued which saw Callisto fight Storm to stay in control of the Morlocks, but, she lost and was forcibly included in the team.

9. Danger

Joss Whedon and John Cassaday created “Astonishing X-Men #7 in 2005. The danger room was shown to suddenly evolve its own thoughts and persona. This ultimately led to the Shi’ar technology take the shape of a female robot titled Danger. She played the role of the X-Men villain till 2009 and then in “Uncanny X-Men” #515 she joined the X-Men team to study humans.

10. Magneto

Iconic comic book creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Magneto in “Uncanny X-Men” #1. He is the top most X-Men villain and heads the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He has the power to control all metals, and he uses this power to wipe out the human race. He even tried starting the World War III by attempting to launch nukes globally.

However, his long-term vision is the same as that of X-Men, and he differs only in his methods. He was shown to undergo a trial in the “Uncanny X-Men” #200 that came out in 1985, and he went on to save Professor Xavier. Later he led the X-Men and the New Mutants during Xavier’s absence. Later it is his unforgiving nature that made the X-Men gang up against him. Ever since he has been working with as well as against them.
