The 1980’s are your answer to this burgeoning profit in movies. 80’s witnessed some of the record-breaking films in terms of their profit margins. It can be said that 80’s was the launchpad of bankable films! A billion dollar in ticket sales in 1980 started off a decade of Cinema that ended on an equally high note.

10. 1987: Three Men and a Baby, $167,780,960 million

Starring Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg and Tom Selleck, this Leonard Nimoy film charted the story of three man trying to raise a baby. With its hilarious plot line and brilliant comic timing of the three actors, this movie brought a jump in the slower latter part of 80’s in terms of its earning. With a budget of just $11 million, it become the first of Walt Disney Productions to gross over $100 million.

9. 1988: Rain Man, $172,825,435

Starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, became not only the highest grossing movie of 1988 but also won the critically acclaimed Oscar for Best Picture. This film might have started out a little slower in comparison to Three Man and a Baby, but it made up for a slow opening weekend in the weeks to come. Six movies crossed the $100 million mark this year, a number which was significantly more than previous years!
